Demographic Changes in the Workforce
As the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age, many companies will be left with open positions and not enough workers to fill them. The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau estimates that the U.S. economy will create 19 million additional jobs between now and 2014. In 2000, 13% of the workforce was age 55 or older; that percentage is estimated to increase to 17% by 2010. The talented younger workforce that needs to fill these positions and sustain the U.S. economy is limited in number and covetous of non-traditional benefits such as flexible workweeks.

What can your company do to adjust to these workforce changes?

  • Attract & keep younger workers; accommodate their desired work arrangements.
  • Since 7 out of 10 workers that retire also plan to work in some capacity, consider keeping retirees on the payroll with unique work arrangements.
  • Spread responsibilities to minimize risk with customer relationships.
  • Use forecasting to adjust your employment settings for a smooth transition.

Social Networking Changes in Business:
Social networking in the digital age has slowly changed the way many companies promote and operate their business. Twenty percent of internet users have visited networking sites such as Linkedin and Facebook in the last 30 days, and, according to recent studies, 36% of internet users have watched some type of video streaming online in 2006 - an 8% increase over the previous year.

What can your business do to utilize this social networking trend?

  • Participate in digital social networks and leverage existing relationships. (Every group of 1,000 people has connections to five million other people.)
  • Take advantage of the increased visits to these sites and the potential for captive audiences by expanding your lines of communication there
  • Use these social networking sites to get background information on future candidates. An individual’s Myspace profile can tell a lot about their personality.

Check STRATEGY CHECK:
Cultural and societal shifts are probably the hardest to spot because the result of these forces affects a society’s general attitudes, preferences, tastes, and beliefs. Catching, or even better, predicting a social trend can be a home run for your business.
